I quote: « Construction of the Stecknitz Canal as one of the oldest artificial waterways of the world ». Seems like a hollow boast when one considers the Nile-Red Sea canal the Pharaohs had dug (completed 490 B.C.)...

In 290 BC the consul Curius Dentatus gave orders for the digging of a canal (Cavo Curiano) to drain the stagnant waters of the river Velino to flow over the Marmore cliff and join the river Nera, 165 metres below, creating the famous Marmore waterfalls.
