[edit]List of people from Maharashtra - You have added many people who IMO, dont belong there. I can understand A.R.Rehman. But Ilayaraja??? MS Subbulakshmi - my God ??? While it may be true that these people may have performed in Maharashtra or Mumbai, I dont feel it is correct to label them as from Maharashtra. Anyway, IMO, the article isnt very useful. It links to a large repository of unwritten articles. Wikipedia does not recommend such articles. Waiting for your response chance 12:57, Dec 22, 2003 (UTC)
- You are free to edit it or recommend it for deletion. IMO, it should not be deleted. - Hemanshu 19:09, 23 Dec 2003 (UTC)
I am removing the following names from the list. Reasons enclosed in paranthesis
- A. R. Rahman (composer based in Chennai, Tamil Nadu)
- Ilayaraaja (composer based in Chennai, Tamil Nadu)
- MS Subbulakshmi (Carnatic singer based in Tamil Nadu)
- Ravi Shankar (Sitar maestro born in Benares and lives in US. Had a brief stint(with not many noteworthy contributions in this period)in Maharashtra, before emigrating. chance 04:54, Dec 24, 2003 (UTC)
I don't want to recommend this article for deletion straight away. But, appreciate if you could add materials to the myriad linked articles with nil contents, soon. The way I would do it would be NOT TO LINK to blank articles here, and add the diminished list to the footer of Maharashtra article. When the list grows large, you can consider moving it to a separate page. Cheers, chance 04:54, Dec 24, 2003 (UTC)
I would suggest deletion of the entire movies and music section. Only those that qualify can be added afresh. We need to come up with the criteria to be a Maharashtrian. Birth, Marathi mother-tongue, Maharashtrian parents ? Jay 18:34, 4 Jan 2004 (UTC)
- The criteria should be birth as well as living in Maharashtra for long time as it is elsewhere. - Hemanshu 18:36, 4 Jan 2004 (UTC)
- As the names appear to have been mass-copied from another page, the names are out of context here, which relate to Maharashtrians. I'll start by deleting the names that don't have a wiki article on them. For the remaining, I'll check the birthplace, regional identity, etc. if available on their respective articles. Jay 19:05, 4 Jan 2004 (UTC)
I've removed these names from the list. If they are Maharashtrian, please add them back.
- Raj Kapoor - punjabi born in pakistan
- Amitabh Bachchan - UP
- Dev Anand - born in punjab, studied in pakistan
- Dilip Kumar - born in pakistan
- Shahrukh Khan - delhi
- Shashi Kapoor - refer raj kapoor above
- Manisha Koirala - nepal
- Preity Zinta - simla
- Tabu - hyderabad
- Kishore Kumar - bengali
- Salman Khan - born in Indore
Added Aishwarya Rai. Her schooling and college was done in Mumbai and still lives in Mumbai.
Try to avoid adding names of politicians with criminal background
- removed bunch of them

Recommended cleanups:
- Alphabetical Sorting
- Correcting wiki links e.g. Sachin Tendulkar (Cricket) needs to be Sachin Tendulkar, (Cricket)
- Introducing sub sections (E.g. Sports --> Cricket, etc)

Comment from article
[edit]MERGE 2 PAGES HAVING SAME CONTENT - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Marathi_people AND http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_people_from_Maharashtra. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 115.118.228.62 (talk • contribs)
- i think both list should not be merged as List_of_people_from_Maharashtra lists notable people who worked in Maharashtra but are not Marathi by ethnicity (e.g. Abhishek Bachchan) while List_of_Marathi_people lists notable people with Marathi ethnicity who might or might not have worked in Maharashtra (e.g. Rani Lakshmibai). This criteria is mentioned in introductory paragraph of lists Gobade.abhay1 (talk) 06:15, 12 November 2010 (UTC)
- Oppose. "Maharashtra" and "Marathi" are two completely different things - one is an administrative entity, the other is a regional language. There is no way to reconcile the contents of this list though they may have great commonality in the form of Maharashtrians of Marathi ethnicity. There are people of Marathi ethnicity all over the world, in almost all western countries, even in a place like, say, Karachi (for example) and they could not be brought into an Indian list. Similarly, people from Maharashtra include a huge slew of minorities who are not of ethnic Marathi descent. This is a characteristic of democracies that ethnicity does not coincide neatly with provincial boundaries, especially today where the Indian polity is going beyond language and ethnic identities and smaller regional identities are coming to the forefront. As this topic is applicable to many other articles too, please discuss it further on the Noticeboard for India related topics. -Animeshkulkarni (talk) 09:12, 1 August 2011 (UTC)
- The merger of this article has been opposed by me and an anon editor. In my case I'm a Konkani Maharashtrian, so technically, if I am notable, I can be added to only one of the articles and not the other. If you want to take it to India- Notice Board, feel free to do so yourself. AshLin (talk) 11:56, 1 August 2011 (UTC)
- Actually the topic i have started there is not about merger but deletion of these pages. Why do we want to have these articles when "Category" can serve this purpose? I don't mind you (or anyone) posting views here. I just thought that India-Notice Board would be a better place for all to discuss (even knowing the fact that people don't usually discuss as much as they fight there) -Animeshkulkarni (talk) 21:11, 1 August 2011 (UTC)
- I wondered exactly the same. Categorisation would, in my opinion, be eminently better than article lists. Velella Velella Talk 21:27, 1 August 2011 (UTC)

MERGER
[edit]I propose that this page List of people from Maharashtra be merged into List of Marathi people. -Animeshkulkarni (talk) 12:58, 27 July 2011 (UTC)
