Garrison?

[edit]

The article states that his birth name was "Gary Edward Keillor," but says nothing about where the nickname "Garrison" came frome, or whether he's now adopted it as his legal name. Worth a mention, at least? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.92.174.105 (talk) 00:49, 28 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I added a note to the "Writing" section on Keillor's adoption of his pen name, sourced from a web page published by the Minnesota Historical Society.
Keillor has mentioned in several venues (City Arts & Lectures, January 17, 2016; The Keillor Reader 2014 Penguin, Ch. 9) that the South lakeside municipality of Isle in Mille Lacs County Minnesota that he frequented in his youth and in which resided an uncle or uncles - a medical doctor and an operator of a Ford agency - was a primary inspiration for the fictional Lake Woebegone. Another municipality of Mille Lacs Lake (there aren't many) on its Western shore in Crow Wing County is the town of Garrison, population ~200. Rt3368 (talk) 11:47, 12 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Musical career

[edit]

A friend of mine pointed out that there is no section on Keillor's musical career, and erstwhile talents. He was/is part of the Hopeful Gospel Quartet, a group that released at least one CD. They suggested that there was evidence that the reason he started the radio show PHC was to get folks he could sing with and a reasonable excuse to do a lot of singing. Is anyone interested in following up this lead? --Bejnar (talk) 05:05, 5 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

PHC "tense"

[edit]

I was wondering if the tense in the PHC section would be more appropriate as past instead of present as it now is. It would more accurately portray things as they are now since Keillor is no longer doing PHC. Thoughts?THX1136 (talk) 16:43, 3 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Comments on gay parents

[edit]

At home I have an anthology of refreshingly self-parodying cartoons from the now sadly extinct gay magazine Christopher Street. One of the funniest, to my mind, shows a bored-looking male couple reclining in their seriously over-furnished New York apartment, complete with Cupid table lamps and other assorted kitsch (there may even have been a dog, but I can't remember). The detail is in every sense excruciating, and one of the men says with a frown "It's interiors like this that give us a bad name." Keillor's comments strike me as similar, and his explanation utterly convincing. I can't imagine for a moment that he's homophobic, as his critics imply by taking his words out of context. Hell, he's from Lake Wobegon, "where all the women are strong and all the men are good looking".188.230.240.75 (talk) 12:34, 5 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Allegations of Sexual Harassment and their Fallout

[edit]

The allegations of sexual harassment against Keillor were of an order of many magnitudes — in public fallout and debate — then what is represented on this page and the page of A Prairie Home Companion. Either the text has not been written, or the pages have been edited to minimize the importance of these events. For instance, far from being subsumed under the controversial comments made in Texas (what?!) the "controversy" of sexual harassment should receive its own section. Same for the page of APHC; at present, the allegations of sexual harassment and the investigation into the matter is totally hidden within other paragraphs and sections which serve to minimize, and I would argue hide, the continental shockwaves that these events had on the history of the show and his career.

Bibliography

[edit]

I have commenced a tidy-up of the Bibliography section:

  • Cite templates will be used where possible.
  • Tables may be used to organise short stories, poems and/or book reviews.
  • While I would prefer capitalization and punctuation to follow the standard cataloguing rules in AACR2 and RDA, the Wikipedia Manual of Style at WP:MOS requires "title case".
  • ISBNs and other persistent identifiers, where available, are commented out, but still available for reference.
  • Links to potentially unreliable digitised copies may be removed.

This is a work in progress; feel free to continue. Sunwin1960 (talk) 11:25, 1 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
