Not enough information

[edit]

I personally think there is not enough info on this man. I think that he either is very careful about what gets out about him or he has a bad publicist.  :)

Beth

I agree with you Beth. But then again, it should be noted that he is not a very famous actor and thus may have not attracted a lot of public attention.

Trina

he was also on 8 or 9th season of x-files

How to use a Talk page

[edit]

Since the contributors so far don't seem to know how to use this space, here are some guidelines:

  • This is not a discussion forum or fan board. Discuss items relavent to the article. For example, stating you liked Elwes better with a mustache isn't a relavent topic.
  • Sign your posts. This is not done by typing your name at the end. This is done by using 3 or 4 tildes (~~~ or ~~~~) at the end of your post. The latter is preferred since it also adds a timestamp.
  • Start a new section for new topics. Do this by using wikimarkup for section headings, i.e. ==Heading==. Adding section breaks (----) also is advised.
  • Indent comments. If you are replying to someone, indent your comments and make sure you have one line of whitespace between your comment and theirs. For example:
Cary Elwes has 32" biceps. I think this should be mentioned in the article. Frecklefoot | Talk 15:13, August 17, 2005 (UTC)
No, they are only 30". I mesured them this morning. I'll update the article with this info.--CaryElwes 17:10, August 17, 2005
Mr. Elwes, I was wondering if you could confirm that Frederick Jackson Turner was your great-grandfather? Thanks! Edwardian 07:12, 2 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

shows the correct formatting of a conversation (sans a heading). Users should use the same indentation for all their comments in a discussion.

I hope this helps. Happy editing! Frecklefoot | Talk 15:13, August 17, 2005 (UTC)

Pronounciation

[edit]

In Britain his name is pronounced Ew-els not El-Wez

So why does someone keep reverting it to El-wez? And what became of the biographical entry that in 2006 he admitted in interview to being bisexual?
Nuttyskin 02:51, 8 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
This has happened again. bellum nuntio.
Nuttyskin 21:15, 13 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I just saw him tonight in the CBS TV film about Pope John Paul II. What a performance! He was the spitting image of the man. He was extraordinarily good. I didn't realise until the end who it was who had played him, just kept wondering "who the heck was that?". Full marks, Cary. FearÉIREANN\(caint) 05:09, 26 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re the bisexuality thing: I presume it needs a source. Once a source is there then of course it has to go in. FearÉIREANN\(caint) 05:12, 26 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think Nuttyskin is mistaking him with Cary Grant. I have read/watched a lot of Elwes' interviews (I'm a huge fan) and I have NEVER seen anything like that. On the other hand, it is said that Cary Grant was bisexual, so probably Nuttyskin just confused them both. VeroSa 6 March 2011 (UTC)

Now the page says - pronounced ELL-WAYS or "Yules" - which is extremely confusing. I checked the page specifically to see how his name is pronounced, and this does not explain it in any way. Which one is it? Is either acceptable? Does he pronounce it differently in Britain and in Hollywood? And in any case, explain it more clearly, at first I just thought WTF how are those the same word, thinking it was just explaining in two ways how to pronounce the same thing instead of explaining two completely different sounds. Then I wondered why the hell is it telling me two completely different ways to say someone's name...85.157.155.247 (talk) 12:44, 28 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

VeroSa, Cary Grant is dead, and Elwes very much alive. Perhaps you mistook him for someone else? Nuttyskin (talk) 02:51, 12 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Tales Update?

[edit]

Someone should add this.

In 1999, Elwes played a Dr. York in an episode of "The Outer Limits" called "Ripper." (cf. IMDB) 69.212.208.127 04:13, 4 September 2006 (UTC) Zuqaqipum[reply]

Brother

[edit]

Someone needs to add info about his brother, Cassian Elwes who is a rather well known and influential person in the film industry. RoyBatty42 09:29, 3 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Descendant of Guilford Dudley?

[edit]

What is the evidence for him being a descendant of Guilford Dudley? Dudley and Jane Grey had no children. Is Elwes a descendant of a Dudley bastard? Or is he a descendant of the Dudley family, and thus related to Guilford Dudley but not descended from him? Or is the whole thing a fabrication? Simhedges 18:41, 17 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:CaryElwes asKarol Wojtyla.jpg

[edit]

Image:CaryElwes asKarol Wojtyla.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

The image Image:LawrenceGordonSawShackled.JPG is used in this article under a claim of fair use, but it does not have an adequate explanation for why it meets the requirements for such images when used here. In particular, for each page the image is used on, it must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Please check

  • That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's description page for the use in this article.
  • That this article is linked to from the image description page.

Citizenship

[edit]

He was born in England, and is currently in English categories. However, I read that he is now a U.S. citizen. Can someone clarify which citizenship(s) he currently holds? Werdnawerdna (talk) 18:33, 26 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It is possible to hold Dual Citizenship! Nuttyskin (talk) 02:54, 12 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Saw VI confirmation?

[edit]

It appears that his filmography section has him returning as Dr. Gordon for Saw VI. Has this been confirmed anywhere? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.187.76.236 (talk) 18:58, 28 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It's not been confirmed at all. Every year jackasses add Dr. Gordon in each passing Saw sequel to his filmography. If it it happens again, just remove it. Thanks.--CyberGhostface (talk) 21:35, 30 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Front picture

[edit]

This picture is terrible. I'm not even sure if its him because of the glasses + beard. Try and get a clearer picture.

It's better than nothing. Yes it is him; please assume good faith. Mike Allen 19:24, 30 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The Goatee

[edit]

Why do we have a photograph of Cary Elwes with a goatee on the article? He is almost always seen without a goatee in films. -- The Anon, 92.20.200.45 (talk) 16:28, 6 June 2010 (UTC), updated 16:30, 6 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Because it's the only free image that we have. This article is not only about his career, it's also about his real life. In real life, that's what he currently looks like. Thank you. Mike Allen 22:40, 6 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Cheers Mike. -- 92.20.200.45 (talk) 18:00, 7 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

RE Happygolucky26's edits

[edit]

I reverted this new registrant (don't know if he's a new user) who made a large number of edits without offering edit summaries or any discussion as to why he was removing another editor's citations. This is the only page to which he has made any edits. He then began the first volley of an edit war by not going to this talk page to discuss why he is blanking other editors' work and removing what appears to be pertinent information. I don't know if this is a hardcore fan, which is often the case in situations such as this. I am going to his page to try to initiate a discussion. If not, we may need admin intervention before this becomes a full-fledged edit war. --Tenebrae (talk) 01:16, 27 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Opening headline

[edit]

I feel it's quite unecessary to clog the header with such detail that is touched upon in sections below it. The header is an introduction to the article and states the birthdate, nationality and general notable roles (in Elwes' case, The Princess Bride and Saw) and a few of his other roles. People revert me constantly telling me too much info isn't good, and when i shorten info, i Still get reverted, saying it contributes. It contradictory balance is getting annoying. The way i wrote it was nice and short, touching upon his general career, at the same time keeping it short and sweet. Rusted AutoParts (talk) 19:16 29 September 2011 (UTC)

Per WP:LEAD, the lead should summarise the whole article. It shouldn't be cursory or unnecessarily short. The version that is being reverted to is a suitable length, your abridgements go against the established policy for lead sections. GRAPPLE X 20:51, 29 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you Grapple. The lead is designed to summarize the article, especially the notable parts. The article has been mostly unsourced (or poorly sourced) for over year, or years--who knows. But I took care of that. You're welcome by the way, but I see a lead paragraph is the more important issue here.. —Mike Allen 21:29, 29 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
My god, no matter what contribution i add, it's always frowned upon and reverted. My opinion is that the header shouldn't be clogged up with info like who his parents are and what his first role was when you can read all that below in the actual article. Isn't that what the page is for, to learn about him? I submitted that short version because it's a nice, short description of his career. A three episode stint on Psych does not pay a major part in his career. But people hide behind these guidelines, which frustrate me because people honestly need to follow a certain method to edit an article headline? These guidelines are what cause these differences of opinion and start things like edit wars. People only need a short and sweet intro to the article, not slammed with a bunch of info instantaneously upon observing the article. Rusted AutoParts (talk) 0:06 30 September 2011 (UTC)
It's not meant to be a "short and sweet intro". The lead is meant to summarise the article. You're not reading the teaser on the back of a book, you're reading a summation of the entire thing. GRAPPLE X 00:21, 30 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
People that follow Wikipedia's guidelines frustrate you? Guidelines are put in place to prevent silly edit wars -- well for people that actually read and follow them. I'm so sorry for turning your two sentences of the summarizing the man's life and career into five sentences (technically one paragraph). You act like I plastered 4 paragraphs down. Why is this a big deal again? —Mike Allen 01:57, 30 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Not at all, i'm just confused why there's a guideline for how an intro should be written. I add a small intro, nope can't do that, per WP:LEAD. Let's put his awards in a collapsable box. WP:COLLAPSE. Per this, per that. And it combines with the anguish i experience when i make a contribution and it's immediately altered or removed. It's not even a bad edit, but it's consistently wiped off the page and makes me feel i haven't contributed to anything. Rusted AutoParts (talk) 13:09 30 September 2011 (UTC)
And no, this isn't a plea to change it back so i can feel special. Rusted AutoParts (talk) 13:13 30 September 2011 (UTC)
But why would you think a small, two sentence intro is sufficient? The article isn't a stub. Usually parents are not added to the lead, unless it somehow plays a part in their notability, and for Elwes I think it does. About collapseable tables, it says "When scrolling lists or collapsible content are used, take care that the content will still be accessible on devices that do not support JavaScript or CSS". You have to take all things into consideration when making changes. No one is trying to prevent you from making contributions. I had a lot of my edits reverted when I was a newbie. Look at Angelina Jolie. Would you want to shorten that lead? —Mike Allen 23:27, 30 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Do I have to look at her? I just ate. GRAPPLE X 23:33, 30 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Democrat?

[edit]

The article and infobox describe Elwes as a Democrat, but I’ve not been able to find any sources to state that he is a US citizen (although I have heard people suggest it). If anyone has one, they can add it (and add American to the citizenship section of his infobox). Otherwise, describing him as a Democrat when he isn’t a US citizen (and therefore not able to register as one) is an empty statement. He can support Democratic candidates, yes, but otherwise the statement is meaningless if he is not a US citizen. Cooltrainer Hugh (talk) 22:34, 27 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Supporting role in The Crush

The page says that he had a supporting role in "The Crush" (1993). Not true. He was the leading actor. Dansator (talk) 00:07, 13 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
